Why do cartoons slap or paint someone with a paint brush filled with green paint?

Green equals the color of jealousy or envy....so in most cartoons this is to convey a ';Nah-Nah-Doo-Doo, I just got the best of you'; Hilarious question, but i gotta ask why must you know?
