I've got a brand new steal gate in my drive way and i need to sand, steel wool or wire brush off the rust then paint it. I'm not sure if i should just buy some spray paint or if i should get a brush. Whats some good paint too I'm figuring on going with rust-o-liumIs it better to spray or brush on paint for a metal gate?
Spraying would be better, however, if there is alot of concrete near it..make sure to cover it properly..You can save alot of steel wooling and sanding as far as the rust is concerned..Use a product called ';ospho'; for the rust..simply spray it on with a regular spray bottle like you use for window cleaners etcetera..spray the ospho on..and let set overnight..this product actually changes the chemical compound of the rust into a different compound, so then there is no chanvce of it coming back..here is some info on Ospho..avaialble at most paint stores..There is also a product called jesco at lowes that is the same exact thing as ospho...Heres some info on it...Save some labor on all of that sanding etc. and use this
You can buy this in quarts fro about 6 dollars..this site shows bulk prices..but it is avaialble in quarts..

Here is a picture of a quart..and customer reviews that use it.. Great stuff..

Here's what you need.......Assuming it's a normal sized gate for a normal sized driveway.....Buy a quart of Acetone, a can of Rustoleum Primer, a can of whatever color of Rustoleum spray paint and a pair of latex gloves. Put on the latex gloves first, wipe the gate down with a rag soaked in Acetone to get all the rust, oil and welding flux residue off of the gate, allow to dry, then spray on the primer, let it dry, spray on one coat of the color paint and spray on another coat if needed. Nothing else needed except for rehanging the gate.
Definitely spray it. I wouldn't do spray paint though. I would get a paint sprayer if you have an air compressor. If you don't have the compressor or can't afford a sprayer then get the spray paint. Brushing it is a pain in the butt especially at the joints. Plus you'll end up with ';weak spots'; in the paint. Spraying is definitely best.
If you feel like burning a million calories, then brush will do.
I'd spray it though because I love sitting on my couch and watching TV all day, but of course I need to paint my steel gate so I'll use the luxury of the spray.
I would spray paint it its faster and I would ask some one where you're going to buy the paint what the best paint is because i don't know.
spray, but make sure you have someone hold up a piece of wood or cardboard on the other side to prevent spraying the whatever.
Spray is much easier to cover with. Make sure you use a good primer first.
1. sand
2. primer
3. paint
spray
spray it
